Chapter Ten

“. . . first genuine overture toward settlement that we’ve seen,” Griffin Banfield was saying.

Trey looked up from his notepad where he’d been mindlessly doodling, realizing upon Griffin’s use of the word ‘settlement’ that he’d probably missed some vital information.

“Are you with me?”

From across the vast expanse of his desk, Griffin trained his intense blue eyes directly on Trey’s face, so he nodded his assent.

“Yes, I’m with you.”

He wasn’t with him. But physically at least, he was sitting in Griffin’s office along with Dondria, being briefed on Griffin’s new thoughts on the Chasen case. Dondria being part of the team was new. She was supposed to be doing some M&A work with Frank Russo, one of the other named partners of the firm but out of nowhere, Griff had begun including her in these meetings.

Trey wasn’t much bothered by that, because besides being as smart as a whip, Dondria was a straight shooter. She wouldn’t come for you without letting you know she was coming for you. And besides, Trey had seniority; there was no real way for her to threaten his path to partnership.

Trey shifted in his chair which was uncomfortable and difficult to settle into. Probably because Griffin didn’t want anyone in his office for too long. Different from the décor anyplace else in the firm, Griffin’s office was modern, all glass, chrome and some synthetic that was supposed to be even better than leather. Even his desk was one enormous slate of tempered glass, on chrome legs that looked downright spindly in comparison to the weight they bore.

Two chairs, black synthetic-whatever-the-hell-it-was and chrome sat opposite the desk. Trey occupied one at the moment and Dondria the other. While he moved around frequently, trying to get a sense of balance on the damn thing, Dondria seemed perfectly comfortable, her brown legs crossed one over the other, her iPad balanced on her knee as she took notes.

Looking up now, Trey noted how Griffin’s eyes fell to those legs every couple of sentences or so as he spoke. He must have missed this before because he was preoccupied. But hell, it looked like Banfield was nursing a little crush!

Trey looked discreetly down at his notepad and scribbled something nonsensical to make it look like he was being attentive. But really, what he was wondering was whether Dondria and Griffin had something going on. He didn’t put it past Griffin, but he wasn’t sure Dondria rolled like that. She was way too smart and talented a woman to risk everything for a simple affair with the boss. If she went there, it would only be because she intended to take him for herself.

“So both of you in San Diego this Thursday to meet with them is the first step,” Griffin was saying. “We’ll check it out before we recommend to the client that she fly out.”

Trey looked up at that. San Diego, this week?

Shit.

“Problem?” Griffin said, reading something in his expression.

“No,” Trey said. “No problem.”

“How about you?’ Griffin said looking at Dondria.
